About aluminium 6262 – Heat treatable with great corrosion resistance

Aluminium alloy 6262 is a popular heat treatable alloy. It comes with excellent corrosion resistance and it is also very strong. If you’re going to do heavy cutting you’ll need an oil lubricant, other than that you can easily cut it dry.

6262 Aluminium – Heat treatable with great corrosion resistance

6262 Aluminium is a popular heat treatable alloy. It comes with excellent corrosion resistance and it is also very strong. If you’re going to do heavy cutting you’ll need an oil lubricant, other than that you can easily cut it dry. 6262 Aluminium is the perfect replacement for aluminium alloy 2011 when you want better corrosion resistance and an improved anodising response.

What is 6262 Aluminium?

6262 Aluminium is easy to weld using every commercial method. It can also be brazed. Here are the physical properties of 6262 Aluminium:

Density 2.71 g/cm3
Melting Point 582°C
Modulus of Elasticity 68.3 GPa
Electrical Resistivity 0.39 x 10-6 Ω.m
Thermal Conductivity 172 W/m.K
Thermal Expansion 23.4 x 10-6/K

Here are the alloy’s typical material properties:

Density 2.72 g/cm3, or 170lb/ft3
Electrical conductivity 44% IACS
Young’s modulus 69 GPa, or 10 Msi
Ultimate tensile strength 280 to 390 MPa, or 41 to 57 ksi
Yield strength 260 to 360 MPa, or 38 to 52 ksi
Thermal expansion 21.8 μm/m-K
Solidus 582°C or 1080°F

Here’s some data on the fabrication responses of 6262 Aluminium:

Machinability Excellent
Resistance welding Excellent
Gas welding Excellent
Arc welding Excellent
Brazing Excellent
Cold workability Poor
Soldering n/a

There are various additions to the alloy as well as bismuth, namely copper, silicon, and magnesium. It’s the bismuth that gives the alloy its excellent machinability. The combination of magnesium, copper and silicon delivers the metal its great corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength.

6262 Aluminium

If you want to machine the alloy, you’ll need to use a high-speed steel or carbide tool machining process to get a smooth finish. Anodising the parts you’ve made is easy enough thanks to the metal’s particularly good machinability and the surface finish you get.

How is 6262 Aluminium made?

6262 Aluminium is usually made by the extrusion, forging, or rolling methods. It is never cast, being a wrought alloy, but it can be clad. You can’t work-harden it but it’s often heat treated to create high strength, low ductility tempers. The bismuth in the alloy means it offers good machinability and delivers a great surface finish when you use high speed steel or carbide tooling to smooth it.

Why was 6262 Aluminium invented?

6262 Aluminium was created to provide an alloy that is heat treatable, has very good corrosion resistance and high strength, while offering better resistance to corrosion and a better anodising response than aluminium 2011.

What is 6262 Aluminium used for?

6262 Aluminium is often used to make:

  • Screw machine products
  • Parts for cameras
  • Couplings an hinges
  • Fittings for marine settings
  • Marine hardware
  • Decorative hardware
  • Decorative appliance fittings
  • Oil and gas line fittings
  • Valves and valve parts
What affects the price of 6262 Aluminium?

Supplies of bismuth, copper, silicon, and magnesium affect the price of 6262 Aluminium, as can the supply of aluminium itself. This can be impacted by political crises like trade wars and sanctions, environmental issues that can change the face of mining, and supply chain problems like those brought about by covid-19.
