7075t6 Aluminium – Low low weight and high stress resistance

Let’s dive deep into the fine detail behind 7075t6 Aluminium, a popular alloy that comes with a low weight and an unusually high resistance to stress, usually available as plate and round bar.

What is 7075t6 Aluminium?

Zinc is the main alloying element in 7075t6 Aluminium, a metal with excellent mechanical properties, good ductility, high strength, toughness, and good resistance to fatigue. It is not good for welding and is a little more brittle than some aluminium alloys thanks to microsegregation, tiny variations in its composition, but comes with much better corrosion resistance than the 2000 series.

7075t6 Aluminium

7075t6 Aluminium’s electrical properties are as follows:

  • Electrical Conductivity – Equal Volume: 33 % IACS
  • Electrical Conductivity – Equal Weight (Specific): 98 % IACS

These are the mechanical properties of 7075t6 Aluminium:

  • Brinell Hardness: 150
  • Elastic Modulus (Young’s and Tensile): 70 GPa
  • Tensile Strength – Ultimate (UTS): 560 MPa
  • Tensile Strength – Yield (Proof): 480 MPa.
  • Elongation at break: 7.9%.
  • Fatigue Strength: 160 MPa.
  • Poisson’s Ratio: 0.32
  • Shear Modulus: 26 Gpa, shear Strength 330 Mpa

7075t6 Aluminium’s thermal properties look like this:

  • Melting Onset (Solidus): 480 °C (890 °F)
  • Specific Heat Capacity: 870 J/kg-K (0.21 BTU/lb-°F)
  • Thermal Conductivity: 130 W/m-K (75 BTU/h-ft-°F)
  • Thermal Expansion: 23 µm/m-K

How is 7075t6 Aluminium made?

This popular T6 temper is achieved by homogenizing pre-cast 7075 metal at 450°C for a few hours, then quenching it. After that it is aged at 120°C for a full 24 hours to create peak strength within the grains and along the boundaries of the grains.

Why was 7075t6 Aluminium invented?

The demands of the aerospace sector made the invention of 7075t6 Aluminium essential, which is why it’s called an aircraft grade alloy. The zinc and copper it contains make this one of the strongest aluminium alloys in existence, stronger than almost every mild steel so ideal for aircraft.

What is 7075t6 Aluminium used for?

7075t6 Aluminium is used to make top-quality lower and upper receivers and extension tubes for M16 rifles, popular with SIG Sauer and a favourite with PGM in the manufacture of their precision rifles. It’s perfect for lacrosse stick shafts and just as good for making sets of camping cutlery. The aerospace, marine, and transport sectors use it widely thanks to its unusually good strength-to-weight ratio, which also means it’s ideal for cycle parts, tools, gliders, missile parts, regulating valve parts, and more.

What affects the price of 7075t6 Aluminium?

Available supplies of the raw materials needed to make this alloy have an impact on the cost, namely the 7075t6 Aluminium itself, the zinc and the copper. While 7075t6 Aluminium is the earth’s commonest metal, extracting and smelting it can come with associated political issues, international trade problems, and fluctuations in global demand.  It’s good to know that the USA has a new president who is less likely to offend and annoy producing nations than Mr Trump was! The slow but steady transformation of the 7075t6 Aluminium industry to a greener, sustainable one could also have an impact on the cost.
