6082 Aluminium – The highest strength 6000 series alloy
6082 Aluminium is a medium strength alloy, known for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and the strongest of the aluminium 6000 range. Frequently used as a structural alloy, the plate is popular for machining. Plenty of people use it these days in preference over aluminium 6061 thanks to the large proportion of manganese it contains. On the other hand it’s less good at making thin, complex extruded shapes and the extruded finish is not as smooth and attractive as others in the series.
What is 6082 Aluminium?
6082 Aluminium comes with a variety of tempers. 6082’s T6 and T651 tempers both machine nicely. 6063 O is un-heat treated and soft. 6063 T4 is solution heat treated, aged naturally until it’s very stable. 6063 T6 is both solution heat treated and artificially aged, and alloy 6063 T651 is solution heat treated, stress relieved with stretching before being artificially aged. These are the alloy’s physical properties:
- Good solderability
- Good weldability with gas
- Good arc weldability
- Good weldability resistance
- Good brazability
- Good cold workability
- Good machinability
While 6082 Aluminium’s weldability is excellent, bear in mind it does lose strength in the weld zone.
How is 6082 Aluminium made?
6082 Aluminium comes in sheet, plate, extrusion, tube and bar forms. It contains:
- Manganese 0.40 – 1.00
- Iron 0.00 – 0.50
- Magnesium 0.60 – 1.20
- Silicon 0.70 – 1.30
- Copper 0.00 – 0.10
- Zinc 0.00 – 0.20
- Titanium 0.00 – 0.10
- Chromium 0.00 – 0.25
Why was 6082 Aluminium invented?
Often called a structural alloy, 6082 Aluminium is mostly used in high stress applications. As a fairly new alloy, its greater strength means it has replaced the 6061 alloy in many applications.
What is 6082 Aluminium used for?
Thanks to its properties, 6082 Aluminium is perfect for making milk churns, trusses, cranes, bridges, skips, beer barrels and bridges, and is also used in a variety of transport applications.
- Density 2.71 gm/cc
- Young’s Modulus 71 GPa
- Yield Strength 280 MPa
- Proof Stress 310 MPa
- Tensile Strength 340 MPa
- Elongation 11%
- Shear Strength 210 MPa
- Hardness Vickers 100 HV
- Thermal Expansion 23.1 μm/m-K
What affects the price of 6082 Aluminium?
Supplies of aluminium have an impact on the price of this alloy, of course, as does the supply of the other raw metals it contains. Geo-political issues including trade wars and sanctions have an impact, as do climate change-led changes in the way metals are mined. Supply chain issues, transport difficulties and shortages can arise from pandemics, grounded ships like the Ever-Given, conflicts, wars and extreme weather conditions.
